Create Poems and StoriesThe students create poems and stories in a variety of ways, like writing about visual self-portraits, describing the sound a ball makes hitting the pavement during recess, imagining themselves as a character in a historical photograph, or acting out a classmate?s short story. Different aspects of writing, such as detail, word choice, point of view, rhythm, setting, plot, and character are addressed. Each workshop presents sample work by diverse authors and might incorporate different genres of writing, such as nature writing, poetry, fantasy, science fiction, or for older students, memoir, ?zine writing, or performance poetry. Through stories and poems, students explore the power of imagination, employing visual, auditory, and kinesthetic experiences to stimulate the senses and facilitate the development of language and writing skills. |
